Developed by BuildWind SRL with the support of the City of Brussels Smart City programme, BrusAir is a next-generation platform that helps everyone understand and act on urban environmental challenges. Free and online at www.brusair.be, it delivers high-resolution (up to 1m) air quality quality data for the City of Brussels and the Northern Quarter.
Through a clear, very detailed map, residents and businesses can see hourly pollution levels generated by advanced computer simulations and real-time readings from the Brussels Environment sensor network. With a quick zoom you can check the air on your street, along your commute or around a favourite playground, then decide whether to pick a cleaner route, open windows, or reschedule outdoor activities.
Precise knowledge of air quality in the city would enable citizens to limit their exposure and hopefully will encourage both citizens and administrations to take initiatives aimed at reducing polluting activities.
BrusAir makes use of the Belgian Air Quality Index (BelAQI). BelAQI provides a comprehensive measure of air quality. It is calculated based on the concentration of several key pollutants: PM2.5, PM10, NO2, and O3.
A higher BelAQI value indicates poorer air quality and greater risk for health. The index ranges from 1 (Excellent) to 10 (Horrible).
